Kashgar Must-See Attractions: Lazy Version Guide

In Kashgar, Dive Into the Nine Must-Visit Spots!

This time in Kashgar, I stayed right next to the old town, waking up naturally every day and stepping out straight into the sights. I explored the best spots in just 9 days. Here’s the straightforward guide; just follow it if you want to chill.

Discovering the Old Town of Kashgar

On my first day, I rushed to the old town, went for photos at 8 AM when there were barely any tourists. Returned to the hotel for a nap, and came back out at 7 PM to catch the sunset and grab some late-night snacks.

Must-Try List:

  • Cangzi Roasted Meat (fresh soup and tender meat)
  • Pilaf (glossy carrots)
  • Lamb Skewers (3 bucks each)
  • Tandoor Baked Meat (crispy outside, tender inside)
  • Thin-skinned Dumplings (bursting with juice when you bite)
  • Yogurt Rice Dumpling (super refreshing)

⚠️ Note: After eating lamb, don’t immediately have ice cream from that "Ancient Ice Mountain" in the old town; I ended up with stomach issues the next day. There’s a city opening ceremony at the east gate every day at 10:30, get there 10 minutes early to snag a front-row spot.

Aitikaer Mosque, a Great Photo Spot

Just a 5-minute walk from the old town, you're not allowed inside, but the entrance is perfect for photos. It’s the largest mosque in Xinjiang with yellow walls and a green dome, the best light is around 3 PM.

Gao Tai Residential Area, Experience Uyghur Culture

This 600-year-old residential area is filled with hidden gem shops now. I picked up a small pottery jar as a souvenir, the owner hand-turned it right in front of me for 50 yuan with free shipping.
Recommended Route: Café → Book Bar → Adras Silk Workshop → Brick Carving Shop, can finish the whole tour in about an hour.

Xiangfei Garden, Immersive Travel Photography Spot

It’s a 15-minute taxi ride, the main tomb is as stunning as a palace, with blue glazed tiles that shine in the sunlight. I saw many girls taking pictures in Adras dresses, entry is 45 yuan including a guide, if you’re not taking photos, you can finish up in about 30 minutes.

Kashgar Region Museum, A Cultural Must-Visit

Whenever I go to a new city, I always check out the museum, it’s closed on Mondays, so don’t show up empty-handed. The second floor has a mummy exhibit, be wary if you’re sensitive. You need about 2 hours to explore, then directly take a taxi to the old town for dinner.

Muztagh Ata Scenic Area, Feel the Charms of the Father of Icebergs

We hired a car for a round trip in one day, and the Father of Icebergs lives up to the name. Karakul Lake changes colors, I’ve captured blue, green, and gray; I recommend going between 3-5 PM for the best light. It’s windy by the lake, so you must bring a down jacket.

White Sand Mountain & White Sand Lake, Find the Perfect Shooting Spot

Go on a sunny day! Go on a sunny day! Go on a sunny day! I can’t stress this enough. The white sand is so fine, it feels like baby powder, if you don't want to walk, just navigate straight to the north bank; you can drive right up to the lakeshore, it’s free! Free! I took 200 photos here.

Yingjisha County Xiaodao Village, Unique Souvenirs Galore

Xiaodao Village is just an hour’s drive from Kashgar, you have to show your ID to buy a knife. I bought 3 Yingjisha knives to send home, free shipping nationwide. Watching the craftsmen sharpen knives on-site was super cool.

Hongqilafu National Gate, A High-Altitude Adventure Challenge

At an altitude of 5000 meters+, I suffered from a headache. The transfer bus had a half-hour wait, the wind was so strong it could blow you away. But the photos at the national gate are truly stunning, it’s advisable to bring an oxygen bottle; I had to use 3 bottles just to recover.
